Mark Salvatus: Territories

Thursday March 15, 2012

I went to the Ateneo Art Gallery to attend the exhibit opening of Territories by Mark Salvatus. Recipient of 2010 Ateneo Art Gallery - Common Room Networks Foundation Residency Grant, 2010 Ateneo Art Gallery - La Trobe University Visual Arts Centre Residency Grant, and 2010 New York Art Project Residency Grant.

The exhibit as I understood is a culmination of Mark's art residences in countries.

One of the artworks in display was a collage of memorabilia from those art residences.

Another was a projected video of a slot machine, which instead of having cherries, bananas or monetary symbols, contained images of graffiti/street art words.

Then there is this piece that consisted of a diptych video. One was playing a mash-up video footage of different people singing, dancing, acting to the tune of "Wannabe" by Spice Girls. And beside that is a live video-capture of anyone brave enough to lip-sych the song in front of a camera.

And last was a projected live video of a revolving assemblage made out of images of building cut out from flyers and advertisements. The assemblage can be viewed on an adjacent room.

The exhibit is still opened for viewing until the 30th of April.
